2005/10/12-16

These days are superbly busy.

On 12/10, Prof Chan and I have a lunch meeting with the Commercial Press¡]°Ó°È¦L®ÑÀ]¡^ in the Langham Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui. They are interested in publishing our book.

After that, I go back to the CUHK to have a meeting with Prof Sin and Larry Poon for our programme ¡mºÞ²z·s«äºû¡n.

Then comes the most challenging task of this week...Starting from October, the 2nd and 4th Sundays' ¡mºÞ²z·s«äºû¡nscripts will be written by the RTHK. I will only handle the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sundays' scripts.

The reason is EMBA insists RTHK should share the production cost of the programme. However, RTHK rejects to offer a penny but suggests managing the transcripts instead. So now they handle some transcripts.

I receive their transcript at 8pm on 12/10, which is disastrous. But the script has to be published in the HKEJ on 15/10. That means I must send them the script no later than 14/10. I think I have only one and a half days left. And I immediately spend all of my time editing or rewriting it. It is stressful.

How bad is it? The writer cuts corners and misses many important contents. The content is not logical and the Chinese is not fluent. All the problems one can imagine can be found in this article and it is even worse than the worst script I have ever edited. ¨£´¸ uses the word "very terrible" to describe its quality.

I think it will be faster for me to redo it. But I can't. Because I need to show the RTHK how bad it is. Otherwise I can't justify discarding their article...

*    *    *

On 13/10, I continue to write the script and do an E-C translation task for the Hong Kong Tourism Board. I also prepare the materials for this Sunday's ºÞ²z·s«äºû.

*    *    *

On 14/10, I finish the script on time and condense it into an HKEJ article. I heave a great sigh of relief.

Then I do an E-C translation job, and then go to the General Post Office in Central to have a meeting with the PMG¡]¶l¬F¸pªø¡^½±¥ô§». He invited me to write a book for him long before, but I can't write until he tells me what he wants me to write. Finally we have this meeting but he also says that I have only one month to write the book. A very difficult task.

The task mainly is transcribing what he says. The difficulty is that time is not enough and I am occupied with many jobs.

After finishing that ºÞ²z·s«äºû script, I decide to relax this evening. I go to the capital of the computer world ---- Golden Centre and finds what I desire ---- EIZO S2110W LCD monitor! I order one immediately and it will be delivered to my home on 24/10. Its huge display size (21 inches) and high native resolution (1680x1050) will make my computer life much easier.

*    *    *

I go to the CUHK again on 15/10, where I attend a talk given by Leonie Kei ¡]¬ö¤å»ñ¡^. I will write the script. Four marketing professors of the CUHK come to listen to the talk, a rare occasion which reflects the charm of Ms Kei.

Other than the talk, I spend most of the time making an analysis of the mistakes made by the RTHK in its transcript of ºÞ²z·s«äºû. I need it to show them why we don't adopt their work. I divide their mistakes into three big categories, namely ¤º®e®ø¥¢, ÅÞ¿è°ÝÃD and »y¤å°ÝÃD. And the length of the analysis is even longer than their script.

*    *    *

16/10 is a Sunday, but I am no less busy. I transcribe one week's episode of ¡m·¨©x^»y¡n, do an E-C translation for the Hong Kong Tourism Board, and go to the RTHK as we have a programme today.

Today's guest is Yahoo! Hong Kong General Manager ½²Ä_¼w. He is interested in my online dictionaries. We may have some forms of co-operation in the future.

In fact, there may be even more works I have done these days but I am too busy to remember them all.

2005/10/11

I watch the movie¡m¤p¥øÃZ¤jªø©º¡nat Shatin UA in the morning, watch Artifacts - The Mystery of Porcelain on ATV World, edit an E-C translation for the Hong Kong Tourism Board, finish the second and third editions of the transcription of a speech by Linus Cheung, and swim in the Ma On Shan swimming pool.

When I have time, I want to read more and spend more time on my dictionaries.

2005/10/10

I continue to edit the transcription of a speech by Linus Cheung, and finish the first edition. I watch the movie¡mµ£¹Ú©_½t¡nat Shatin UA, run in the evening, and update ¡mªFªF¿ù§O¦rµü¨å¡nin the late evening. The number of terms is increased to 95,000.

2005/10/9

I transcribe one week's episode of ¡m·¨©x^»y¡n, prepare the material for the programme¡mºÞ²z·s«äºû¡nof 16/10, read Sunday Morning Post, watch Malcolm in the Middle, and swim in Shatin swimming pool.

I also start to edit the transcription of a speech by Linus Cheung¡]±i¥ÃÀM¡^. This is a long speech and I will spend three days on it. The transcript is done by a year-3 TRA student and is well-written.

In view of my busy schedule in the near future, I think I am keeping my life simple and trying to do as many things as possible in a day's time.

2005/10/8

I finish reading À¹±á§Ó¡¦s ¡mÅý·R¸¶i§Aªº¤ß¡n. There are too many books that I want to read, and many jobs that I need to do. So I am always in the conflict between reading and earning.

I attend the EMBA¡¦s annual conference at JW Marriott Hotel¡]¸U»¨°s©±¡^today. All speakers speak in English, perhaps because one of our guest speakers is a foreigner ¡V Michael Smith¡]ªò»Ê°ª¡^, CEO of HSBC. Dick Lee¡]§õ©ú¶f¡^, the Commissioner of the Police, speaks amazingly fluent English and I am definitely envious.

In the sharing session, perhaps because it is an English only occasion, very few people volunteer to share and make the moderators rather embarrassed. In front of 200 EMBA alumni, I dare to raise my hand and make a sharing in this unusually quiet moment, but I find I speak in a very awkward manner.

That¡¦s why I write my diary in English again so that I can make improvements.

After the conference, I go to Lai Chi Kok ´IÁ{º®´ä to have dinner with my mom and my sister. It provides some vegetarian dishes and the quality is not bad. And I have 4 kinds of ¡§green vegetables¡¨ from different dishes for the dinner: ¥Õµæ¥J¡B³Ó¥Ê¡B»e¨§¡Bµæ¤ß and feel delighted. Other vegetables for this dinner include ¥VÛ£¡B¤ì¦Õ¡B¥Í®Ú¡B¥É¤l¨§»G¡BÆVµæ and ¦Ê¦X.

2005/10/7

There is a new book related to me ¡X ¡m108Ó¦pªG¡n. I am one of the contributors and buy one today. For one thing, the book has my article. For another, I want to know what other people write with this open-ended topic.

My article is °²¦p§d©ú´Ü¨S¦³¦åÀù, which was written long before. It seems that many contributors didn¡¦t hand in their articles on time, that's why the book comes out so late. I almost forget I have written that article.

I read ten other articles in this book tonight and find them interesting.

I attend the meeting for theºÞ²z·s«äºûprogramme of 16/10, edit some C-E translation for a textbook publisher, and translate two PowerPoint files from E to C for the APIB¡]¨È¤Ó¤u°Ó¬ã¨s©Ò¡^.

I also swim at the Shatin swimming pool tonight. After that, I go to IKEA as I want to buy more new cabinets to make my home cosier. I buy many new pieces of furniture this year as I have enough money and want to improve my living environment and lead a more comfortable life.

2005/10/6

I condense the ºÞ²z·s«äºû¡¦s script into an HKEJ¡¦s article. And I translate some pamphlets of Philips and LG from E to C.

I lunch at ªG¤@¹D°·±dÀ\ÆU, and then buy some extra boxes at IKEA to further tidy up my things. I go running in the evening.

I watch Man's Heritage: Penguins Under Siege on the Pearl. Penguins are always lovable.

2005/10/5

My new book comes out today. This is my second book. I don't count the ·¨ÅK¼Ù's books as they were ruined by the MingPao Publisher¡]©úµ¡¥Xª©ªÀ/©ú³ø¥Xª©ªÀ¡^ and I even want to distance myself from those books because of the poor quality.

The new book has a good-looking cover:

And I get 30 copies of the book today as royalties. Publishing books is not a lucrative business, but still it has an uncanny appeal and many people don't mind losing a lot of money doing this as long as they can have a book with his name on the cover.

Today we also have a meeting with the CU Press¡]¤¤¤j¥Xª©ªÀ¡^at the CUHK, discussing two EMBA books which are scheduled to be published in late January. The editor-in-chief of the HKEJ¡]«H³ø¡^³¯´º²» also comes. This is the first time we meet, though we have co-operated for over two years.

Meanwhile, I will make a book for the Hongkong Post¡]»´ä¶l¬F¡^ soon and the book is also scheduled to be published in late January. Another book in the pipeline is also an EMBA book which may be published by the Commercial Press¡]°Ó°È¡^. We will have lunch with the publisher next Wednesday. So I may work on 4 books simultaneously from now to January. And there is a 4-letter word that best describes the situation: busy, or rather very busy.

Besides the meeting with the CU Press, I work on the script of ºÞ²z·s«äºû for most of the time. As one of the transcribers has personal problem, I need to do her part this week too.
